The Easter Monday Road Race, happens soon – not too late to volunteer for an hour, my inbox hasn’t exactly been flooding with offers, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Elsewhere in Whitehead……The Old Flower Shop has reopened as a Nail bar and Tanning Salon, we wish them the best of luck.

Pizza Gourmet is now Little Pizzeria, same owners just a new name, but sadly their front door was damaged by vandals over the weekend. It’s a shame to see such behaviour in Whitehead and I would encourage residents to report any such happenings by phoning 101 (the non emergency police number).

The Whistle Stop Cafe is in full swing with their Bistro Nights so call in and see them or phone 028 9335 3899, food looks great.

Whitehead Glasgow Rangers Sunday Club has The Singing Barmaid with Cecil Knox on Sunday 20th March 4-8pm. There’s ballots and  spot prizes and the kitchen is open too. Great music and fun.

The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland, RPSI, are running  two trains each day on Easter Monday and Easter Tuesday, visit their website for more information www.steamtrainireland.com/events/

County Antrim Yacht Club is holding an Open Day on Easter Saturday (26th March) with taster sessions for those interested. Registration is from 1.30pm and on the water by 2.00pm. A wonderful opportunity for the community and a lovely day out for all ages, not forgetting the now infamous BBQ!

Starting in the Community Centre on Monday 11th April at 7pm is a Christianity Explored Course. An informal course for people who’d like to investigate Christianity, or just brush up on the basics. You don’t need to be religious, it’s a chance to find out more, whilst  meeting new people. This will last for six weeks and is open to everyone so please feel free to come along. More information to follow.

Brighter Whitehead are hard at it these days and the town is looking lovely. The train on Chester Ave has had a revamp, well done BW! If you would like to join the lovely folks keeping our town so beautiful and colourful please get in touch with me and I’ll give you details.

They’ve been nominated again for this year’s Britain in Bloom, who could forget they scooped the Silver in 2014, and won Community Rail Halt Award last year for Whitehead Train Station and came second in Small Town Category. New volunteers are always welcome though, don’t be scared, they are a great  bunch!

Highway To Health

“Highway to Health is a simple and innovative scheme which aims to encourage people of all ages to walk for leisure and good health. It uses attractive pole signs at one-kilometer intervals on an established route.”

Every adult in Northern Ireland should accumulate 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week.

Northern Ireland has one of the highest rates of heart disease and stroke in the western world. Taking regular exercise is one effective method of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Highway to Health Whitehead: This seaside walk goes from the Yacht Club to the split in the paths just beyond Sunshine House. It measures exactly 2 Kms and is marked both at Kms and half Kms. Due to its “there and back” format walkers are offered measured walks ranging from one to four kilometres.

There are 70 main Highway to Health walks located across Northern Ireland, for you to choose from. The Highway to Health routes are supported by NICHS and the local councils. Details of all Highway to Health walking routes including route descriptions, images and downloadable maps can be found on WalkNI.com

People who have not been taking regular exercise should start slowly and gradually build up to 30 minutes per day. It may be advisable to consult your doctor if you have any history of cardiovascular disease in the family or if you are overweight. It is important in these instances that you begin with gentle exercise, moving to a brisker pace in time.”
